Bluestone Honed Tiles - Pool Coping

Class 1 Bluestone - China *Exclusive to Edwards Slate & Stone*

This type of Bluestone is the best available in Australia and is our favourite. It is from a particular quarry in Fujian province in China and most closely resembles Australian Bluestone in colour, texture and catspaw distribution. It is a stable type of bluestone and does not require fixing additives in the mortar making it a tradesman‘s favourite. This reduces costs substantially during the fixing process. Edwards was the first to release this bluestone into the Victorian market and it is unsurpassed in quality.

Class 2 Bluestone - China

This type of Bluestone is from Hainan in China and is sold under different names, including local Australian suburbs. It is a hard and dense Bluestone, with a fine grain, it closely resembles a concrete look. There are three different types from Hainan, a premium grade, a type that rusts prolifically over time, and a third grade which has significant colour variation. In all cases Hainan Bluestone must be chemically adhered during the fixing process. This means chemical additives MUST be used during the fixing process. Failure to do often causes the stone to fail to bond to the mortar during the fixing process. This type of Bluestone is significantly cheaper, but the cost of fixing is significantly more. We only stock the premium grade of Hainan Bluestone.

Bluestone

Bluestone is one of the most exciting paving stones available for landscaping today. It is a versatile stone suitable for heavy wear areas such as driveways. It is equally at home when used in a casual garden path or around a modern pool setting. Bluestone retains its appeal over many decades and responds well to sealing which makes cleanup very easy. Bluestone is available in a huge range of sizes and also in various thickness's, seek professional advice before selecting the thickness of your stone as it varies according to application. Edwards Slate & Stone was the first company in Melbourne to import and distribute bluestone. The quarry we selected in China produces bluestone of a very similar quality and colour to the local blue stone in Port Fairy but at a fraction of the price. Bluestone honed also known as Honed Basalt, has been buffed with a honing machine to create a smooth yet non slip surface suitable for internal flooring such as pool rooms & bars, entertaining rooms, outdoor paving projects including swimming pool coping & surrounds, patios, entertaining areas e.g. BBQ, garden paths and walkways, heavy duty driveways. Bluestone is a dense, durable hardwearing stone often used in commercial applications e.g. paving in Melbourne CBD, airports, hotels, etc. Our Bluestone with aesthetic beauty and colour, has the right amount of open pores commonly known as "cats paw" giving a unique appearance closely resembling the well-known Australian Bluestone in both colour and texture. Our Dark Honed Bluestone, honed to a semi polished finish, is a compact grained stone with minimum colour variation, suitable for internal applications both domestic and commercial. Recently large volumes of Chinese Bluestone have been imported into Victoria by other suppliers, from another area in China and this Bluestone has failed to perform well (comes away from the mortar it has been laid into); however the stone looks attractive in a showroom environment and is cheaper in price. This type of Bluestone is also sold as premium grade, however, it is clearly not the case. So buying Bluestone from a trusted and knowledgeable supplier is important.

Sealing:

Sealing stone has many advantages, it provides protection from stains, facilitates easy clean up, reduces the effects from chemical attack and can enhance the beauty of the stone. Sealing stone can extend its life and also reduces the effects of oxidisation by reducing the movement of water through the stone.

There are two main types of sealers, the first is an invisible type, which leaves the stone with a natural look. The second enhances the colours within the stone. The price of the sealers varies considerably according to its longevity and its application. For this reason we always suggest seeking professional advice before making the final selection.

We always suggest sealing stone around a swimming pool, this is because swimming pools can contain salts and other chemicals which can leach into the surrounding areas. There are different types of sealers for various applications.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we stock three different brands of professional stone sealers. This means we can help you make your final decision based on, application, aesthetic finish, longevity and budget.

Dry Treat Sealers

Dry Treat is backed with a 15 year warranty. It includes a very good quality sealer for pool surrounds as it protects stone from chemical attack.

Aqua Seal

Aqua Seal provides an excellent range of high end sealers.

Tasman Chemicals Sealers

Tasman provides a range of quality sealers that are more budget orientated.

C.T.A. Adhesives

Construction Technologies Australia offer a 12 year warranty on their fixing materials. Edwards Slate & Stone keep Proset Super and Ultrapro Adhesives in stock, which is suitable for most applications.

Grout Clean-Up

Clean up grouting shortly after application with a sponge and plenty of clean water. Do not allow grout to dry on the surface of the tile. Do not use hydrochloric acid to clean up grout smears.

If any grout smears remain seek professional advice before using grout removal chemicals, as some chemicals will harm the stone.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we sell a variety of grout removal products.

Maintenance

Sweep or hose when needed. To remove dirt & stains use a solution of mild detergent, we recommend Tilekleen by Tasman Chemicals.

Apply the solution on the surface & agitate the area with a stiff broom or brush prior to rinsing with water. Moss can be removed with a mild solution of household bleach and water.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we sell a variety of specialist stone cleaners for hard to remove stains.

Notes

Do not use hydrochloric acid to clean. When using coloured grout, always pre-seal the tiles prior to grouting, to minimise colour leaching into the tile.

Sealing also reduces mineralisation in the stone (a red colour forming on the stone as a result of iron pyrite reacting with water).

If using adhesive to increase the bond between the stone and the mortar or adhesive bed then butter a thin coat on the entire back of the tile, do not just notch trowel the back of the tile with adhesive.

For best results select tiles from different crates to ensure a blend of colour. We recommend the use of expansion joints for exterior & interior applications.
