Slate Crazy Paving

Sunset is a remarkable random crazy Slate as it boasts of autumn colours that suits the Australian environment and polygonal shapes that makes the final result, after laying, extraordinary. Crazy paving (random shaped stone) has been used to create paths, garden features and outdoor landscaping for as long as gardeners have been digging the soil! Crazy paving means the size varies according to how the stone was quarried. The edges are usually hand cut, however occasionally one edge can be sawn due to the extraction process. Each crazy paving product is sized differently according to the quarries ability to produce ie. some crazy paving comes in large sizes and some the sizing is much smaller. The best way to view crazy paving is ultimately in the crates. Keep in mind big pieces do not always mean better, as they are usually broken into smaller sizes by the fixer so that they match with the surrounding stone when laid. Sunset Slate crazy paving is also a very dense making it suitable for most type of landscaping including domestic & commercial applications. Due to the interesting shapes and extra thickness of the Slate it makes excellent stepping stones. Sealing:

Sealing stone has many advantages, it provides protection from stains, facilitates easy clean up, reduces the effects from chemical attack and can enhance the beauty of the stone. Sealing stone can extend its life and also reduces the effects of oxidisation by reducing the movement of water through the stone.

There are two main types of sealers, the first is an invisible type, which leaves the stone with a natural look. The second enhances the colours within the stone. The price of the sealers varies considerably according to its longevity and its application. For this reason we always suggest seeking professional advice before making the final selection.

We always suggest sealing stone around a swimming pool, this is because swimming pools can contain salts and other chemicals which can leach into the surrounding areas. There are different types of sealers for various applications.

Slate is not usually sealed in external applications as its density is such that stains do not hold over a long period of time.

In interior applications Slate can be sealed with a water based sealer (for a lighter appearance) or a solvent based sealer (for a darker wet look), both types allow easy daily maintenance.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we stock three different brands of professional stone sealers. This means we can help you make your final decision based on, application, aesthetic finish, longevity and budget.

Dry Treat Sealers

Dry Treat is backed with a 15 year warranty. It includes a very good quality sealer for pool surrounds as it protects stone from chemical attack.

Aqua Seal

Aqua Seal provides an excellent range of high end sealers.

Tasman Chemicals Sealers

Tasman provides a range of quality sealers that are more budget orientated.

C.T.A. Adhesives

Construction Technologies Australia offer a 12 year warranty on their fixing materials. Edwards Slate & Stone keep Proset Super and Ultrapro Adhesives in stock, which is suitable for most applications.

Grout Clean-Up

Clean up grouting shortly after application with a sponge and plenty of clean water. Do not allow grout to dry on the surface of the tile. Do not use hydrochloric acid to clean up grout smears.

If any grout smears remain seek professional advice before using grout removal chemicals, as some chemicals will harm the stone.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we sell a variety of grout removal products.

Maintenance

Sweep or hose when needed. To remove dirt & stains use a solution of mild detergent, we recommend Tilekleen by Tasman Chemicals.

Apply the solution on the surface & agitate the area with a stiff broom or brush prior to rinsing with water. Moss can be removed with a mild solution of household bleach and water.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we sell a variety of specialist stone cleaners for hard to remove stains.

Notes

Do not use hydrochloric acid to clean. When using coloured grout, always pre-seal the tiles prior to grouting, to minimise colour leaching into the tile.

Sealing also reduces mineralisation in the stone (a red colour forming on the stone as a result of iron pyrite reacting with water).

If using adhesive to increase the bond between the stone and the mortar or adhesive bed then butter a thin coat on the entire back of the tile, do not just notch trowel the back of the tile with adhesive.

For best results select tiles from different crates to ensure a blend of colour. We recommend the use of expansion joints for exterior & interior applications.
