Sealing stone has many advantages, it provides protection from stains, facilitates easy clean up, reduces the effects from chemical attack and can enhance the beauty of the stone. Sealing stone can extend its life and also reduces the effects of oxidisation by reducing the movement of water through the stone.
There are two main types of sealers, the first is an invisible type, which leaves the stone with a natural look. The second enhances the colours within the stone. The price of the sealers varies considerably according to its longevity and its application. For this reason we always suggest seeking professional advice before making the final selection.
We always suggest sealing stone around a swimming pool, this is because swimming pools can contain salts and other chemicals which can leach into the surrounding areas. There are different types of sealers for various applications.
Slate is not usually sealed in external applications as its density is such that stains do not hold over a long period of time.
In interior applications Slate can be sealed with a water based sealer (for a lighter appearance) or a solvent based sealer (for a darker wet look), both types allow easy daily maintenance.
At Edwards Slate & Stone we stock three different brands of professional stone sealers. This means we can help you make your final decision based on, application, aesthetic finish, longevity and budget.
