Travertine Drop Face Pavers - Pool Coping Tiles

We recommend 30mm thick Travertine drop face pavers for exterior projects and high wear areas, also recommended as a pool coping paver for both strength and aesthetic reasons. Tumbled and unfilled tiles, this stone has been tumbled with small stones to give an authentic antique look and the small holes in the Travertine have been left unfilled. This type of Travertine is usually specified for exterior applications. Our Travertine is sourced directly from a family owned quarry in Turkey. Our close relationship with the quarry owners helps us to select a variation of Travertine that "stone lovers" really appreciate. This is important as Travertine varies enormously in density, size of the holes in the stone and colour. It is normal practice for the quarries to grade the stone according to its characteristics prior to export, (more compact and dense stone with smaller holes is charged at a higher rate). Therefore it is important, when selecting Travertine, to relate quality with price. At Edwards Slate & Stone we hold large stocks of Travertine and invite inspection of the stock prior to purchase.

Sealing:

Sealing stone has many advantages, it provides protection from stains, facilitates easy clean up, reduces the effects from chemical attack and can enhance the beauty of the stone. Sealing stone can extend its life and also reduces the effects of oxidisation by reducing the movement of water through the stone.

There are two main types of sealers, the first is an invisible type, which leaves the stone with a natural look. The second enhances the colours within the stone. The price of the sealers varies considerably according to its longevity and its application. For this reason we always suggest seeking professional advice before making the final selection.

We always suggest sealing stone around a swimming pool, this is because swimming pools can contain salts and other chemicals which can leach into the surrounding areas. There are different types of sealers for various applications.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we stock three different brands of professional stone sealers. This means we can help you make your final decision based on, application, aesthetic finish, longevity and budget.

Dry Treat Sealers

Dry Treat is backed with a 15 year warranty. It includes a very good quality sealer for pool surrounds as it protects stone from chemical attack.

Aqua Seal

Aqua Seal provides an excellent range of high end sealers.

Tasman Chemicals Sealers

Tasman provides a range of quality sealers that are more budget orientated.

C.T.A. Adhesives

Construction Technologies Australia offer a 12 year warranty on their fixing materials. Edwards Slate & Stone keep Proset Super and Ultrapro Adhesives in stock, which is suitable for most applications.

Grout Clean-Up

Clean up grouting shortly after application with a sponge and plenty of clean water. Do not allow grout to dry on the surface of the tile. Do not use hydrochloric acid to clean up grout smears.

If any grout smears remain seek professional advice before using grout removal chemicals, as some chemicals will harm the stone.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we sell a variety of grout removal products.

Maintenance

Sweep or hose when needed. To remove dirt & stains use a solution of mild detergent, we recommend Tilekleen by Tasman Chemicals.

Apply the solution on the surface & agitate the area with a stiff broom or brush prior to rinsing with water. Moss can be removed with a mild solution of household bleach and water.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we sell a variety of specialist stone cleaners for hard to remove stains.

Notes

Do not use hydrochloric acid to clean. When using coloured grout, always pre-seal the tiles prior to grouting, to minimise colour leaching into the tile.

Sealing also reduces mineralisation in the stone (a red colour forming on the stone as a result of iron pyrite reacting with water).

If using adhesive to increase the bond between the stone and the mortar or adhesive bed then butter a thin coat on the entire back of the tile, do not just notch trowel the back of the tile with adhesive.

For best results select tiles from different crates to ensure a blend of colour. We recommend the use of expansion joints for exterior & interior applications.
