Granite Paving Stone

Granite paving stones or “pavers” can make a colourful and interesting way of paving a driveway or patio. The beauty of natural stone, combined with expert craftsmanship and design can produce a unique and lasting result. In the past granite blocks were often used to pave city streets. However, concrete and asphalt have replaced most of this work because of the lower material and construction cost.

Flamed Granite vs other outdoor paving

Flamed Granite pavers has some key qualities that makes it an outstanding paving solution.

1. It is durable and long lasting.

2. Excellent non slip properties.

3. Is is cut and sized accurately which results in “clean” lines on the project.

4. It is very cost competitive.

We suggest comparing these qualities with other man made products and you will find flamed granite is an excellent option to consider. In addition, if you are considering granite as an outdoor paving, then Bluestone might also be of interest. Visit www.melbournebluestonetiles.com.au to find out more.

Do I need to seal flamed Granite tiles in an outdoor setting?

Do I need to seal flamed Granite tiles in an outdoor setting? The short answer is no, flamed Granite is not difficult to clean and will not colour fade. Over time many contaminates will simply dissipate.

However there are some major benefits to sealing any stone outside, and this includes flamed granite. Clean up will be made even easier, and around B.B.Q areas that is a must! Also general dirt, moss and other contaminates can be cleaned up with ease.

What is a flamed surface on Granite tiles?

When Granite is cut from a large solid block of stone from the quarry it has a flat, and uninteresting surface.

Depending on its final use, the stone can be processed in different ways. Typically when the granite is used for building facades it is usually polished into a highly reflective surface. This polishing has the benefit of highlighting the natural colour of the stone as well.

For outdoor use the granite can be flamed to improve its non slip characteristics as well as its aesthetic appeal. This involves passing a high temperature flame over the surface of the granite, which causes the surface of the granite to break away leaving a lovely textured finish. The finish is called flamed.

At Edwards the Granite has gone through an additional process to take the superficial roughness that sometimes results from the flaming process, creating a good balance between a non slip product, yet pleasant to walk on, even in bare feet.

About Granite Tiles From Edwards Slate & Stone

Edwards Slate & Stone stock four different variates of Granite, a black, light grey, dark grey and taupe.

The surface of the stone has been flamed to create a non slip surface making the stone suitable for use where safety is a priority. This applies to swimming pool surrounds and is useful in all outdoor applications.

All our Flamed surface tiles have been further processed to retain their non slip characteristics yet reduce the coarse feeling sometimes associated with non slip paving.

We stock large format sizes which tend to work better in outdoor settings, and keep in stock a complete range of bull nose and drop face tiles.

What size tile should I choose for Granite?

Traditional thinking used to say that, “the larger the area to tiled the bigger the tile should be.” While this rule has some use however nowadays it should only be used as a guideline. It is normal for large format tiles to be used in small areas, especially when the product is flamed Granite or Bluestone.

It is especially desirable to use large format tiles as feature stepping stones, whether in a formal setting, such as the entrance to a modern architecturally designed home or an informal setting such as a garden path.

At Edwards Slate & Stone we stock 500×500 and 800x400mm dimensioned tiles which will work well in any setting.
